TOWING

TRAILERS

Most U-Haul trucks have a 2" ball rated for 7500 lbs and an extra 3/4" hole for a 1 7/8" ball (to be provided by customer if required). 10' trucks have only a 2" ball rated for 6000 lbs. Trucks have 4-pin plug and 7-way Blade plug FOR LIGHTS ONLY.

U-Haul does not provide brake controllers for electric brake systems. All trailers towed behind a U-Haul truck must either not require brakes, have mechanical surge brakes, or customer must provide their own brake controller and wiring adapter or a wireless brake controller . Customer is required to investigate and meet all local towing laws in every jurisdiction they will be travelling through.

Some 14' trucks have an extra 1" hole for a 2 5/16" ball (to be provided by customer if required) and a hitch rated at 10,000 lbs. The newest 14' & 17' trucks have an extra 2" square receiver for standard hitch equipment (to be provided by customer if required). A special request can be made for these trucks but U-Haul cannot guarantee availability in your area.

It is the customer's responsibility to provide the following before renting any trailer:

Proper rated hitch.

Correct size and load rated ball - 2" 5,000 lbs recommended - 1 7/8" will do for lighter trailers.

Functional 4-pin wiring harness for trailer lighting.

One-Way rentals may have to purchase a plug adapter to suit the wiring system of your vehicle.

All larger U-Haul trailers come with mechanical surge brakes. No electric brake system is required.

It is the customer's responsibility to ensure that the hitch and safety chains are fastened securely and correctly. Staff will assist in hooking up equipment.

CAR CARRIERS may only be used to tow cars on U-Haul's list of acceptable vehicles. Towing an auto transporter with a heavier vehicle may require a 2" ball rated for up to 8,000 lbs.

TOW DOLLIES attached to a BC plated vehicle require a PERMIT from ICBC before taking the equipment on the road.

PLEASE NOTE: U-Haul does not allow the rental of any trailer behind a Ford Explorer of any year or model (including pickup).
